This is a common question I hear nearly every adoption event. It amuses me how little people know about these dogs, and how persuasive misinformed news stories can be.

I have done so much research about the breed and feel it necessary to prepare all volunteers and breed advocates for this very question. After all what is the most important thing in a parents life? The one thing they have to protect against the world and anything else out there that could hurt them- their kids! In this case we are not fighting fire with fire but WATER with fire. It’s our jobs to put this fire out!

So here are some very interesting tidbits to remember that you may not know:
• Pit bulls are actually nicknamed “The Nanny Dog” due to their protective and nurturing nature toward children. – Animal Planet (either Dogs 101 or It’s Me Or The Dog, I can’t remember)
• Petey from The Little Rascals was a Pit Bull
• UKC registry- “American Pit Bull Terriers make excellent family companions and have always been noted for their love of children.” They are only 1 of 3 breeds noted for their love of children.
• UKC registry- “The American Pit Bull Terrier is not the best choice for a guard dog since they are extremely friendly, even with strangers.”
• AKC registry- ” The American Staffordshire Terrier is a people-oriented dog that thrives when he is made part of the family and given a job to do. Although friendly, this breed is loyal to his family and will protect them from any threat.”
• AKC registry- Staffordshire Bull Terrier “Today, he serves primarily as a family companion and is seen in the show, obedience and agility rings.”
• AKC registry- Staffordshire Bull Terrier “This, coupled with its affection for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, makes it a foremost all-purpose dog.”
• http://en.wikipedia.org- “In the mid 1800′s Pit Bull-type dogs became popular as family pets for citizens who were not involved in dog-fighting or farming.”

*As a dog enthusiast you should know what a UKC/AKC Registry is. If you don’t a breed registry is the standard for a breed. “Breed standards help define the ideal animal of a breed and provide goals for breeders in improving stock.” If you want to show your dog it must meet all the standards for that breed including temperment, gait (walk), characteristics, and appearance.
Scores from the American Temperment Test society:
- American Pit Bull Terrier 85.3%
- American Staffordshire Terrier 83.9%
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier 88%
Compared to:
- Chihuahua 71.1%
- Dachshund 72.7%
- Golden Retriever 84.6%
- German Shepard 83.7%

And just for fun, I know this is a Bull Terrier but I love this photo!

Pits can be the sweetest dogs to have as a companion. But, as with any dog, it is a product of its environment!

Thank you for taking your time to make this site!!!!! I LOVE pitbulls & am constantly educating people with the TRUTH & the FACTS about the breed!!!
I’ve watched every Dogs 101 that has been on animal planet & love the pit they have on everytime the show comes back from commercial! But I still have not seen the American Staff/Pitbull!! I have heard them mention the breed when they are doing a segment on another breed but haven’t seen theirs. Have you?!
I’m actually very annoyed at what this “dog trainer”, who owns a chihuaha, said! He said that chihuahas don’t know their own size, which I know they don’t, but he went further to Ignorantly say that a chihuaha will just walk right up to a Pitbull because they don’t know how small they are & that the Pitbull would take the dog as if it were a “potatoe chip” snack. I Thought you Had to be educated to be a dog trainer & to be a “reputable source” for Animal Planet’s Dogs 101 show!!!!!!! He just Lied on tv & now more people are going to think pits are “bad dogs”! I have seen Countless Pitbulls & chihuahas meet each other for the first time & Every single time, the Pitbull was cautious of the “smallest dog breed in the world”!! I have Never seen or heard of a Pitbull treating a chihuaha like a “potatoe chip”!!! Pitbulls ARE VERY LOVING, loyal dogs who want to please their owners!!!!
I’m very happy to see that there are other people out there who care & love pitbulls so much that they also want to let people know the TRUTH about them being wonderful, loving, caring dogs & that there is “No such thing as a ‘bad breed’”!

Thank you for loving the breed Rachael. The main point of why we started this blog is to help educate people on the breed because that is the root of the reason they are in the situation they are in. People just don’t understand them and believe every negative story they hear. Ignorant people and people who believe everything they hear is the reason why 10,000 pit bulls are going to be euthanized in shelters this year!
I have not seen the “pit bull” episode on dogs 101 yet either. I too have heard positive things on other breed episodes. I think they may be avoiding it to upset either side of the spectrum, the advocates and the ignorant. My chihuahua and pit bull were best friends. The night the chihuahua passed away (from old age) my pit slept in her spot the entire night which was sweet but invasive as it was in my under arm! She not only was supporting me in one of the hardest moments of my life but also sharing in my grief! I occasionally see her staring at my chi’s memorial shelf in our living room which has her ashes and pics on it.
Feel free to email me good articles or personal stories so I may add them to the blog. melinacazimero@hotmail.com

Another thing I think you can add to your website is that Eukanuba says that pitbulls are Especially Great dogs to have with kids because they are loving & have a high pain tolerance (kids pull on dogs ears & tails & pitbulls respond back with Kisses & affection!!!!)

I have owned pitbulls all my life and have rescued one from a fighting ring, one from being put to sleep, and one from an abusive owner. All three of my rescued pitbulls are affectionate, great with my children and overall grateful to be in a family that loves them. The pitbull I rescued from a fighting ring was used to breed and teach the puppies to fight. She instantly took to my 18 month old son as her own and followed him everywhere. He often fell asleep on top of her. I will never have any breed but a pitbull because they are loyal, affectionate, and a good addition to any family who has the time and affection to bestow on them. Thank you for this site and educating people on how great the breed is.

I read and liked your page but to my under standing in england they nick named the staffordshire bull terrier ”The Nanny Dog” not the pit bull. But i agree pit bulls are loving dogs and have a bad rap. This is my first time visiting your site and looking forward to coming back and reading updates.

Manuel-
Thank you for visiting and leaving a comment…. I love responses from readers! Pit Bulls in general were once known as “The Nanny Dog” but due to our wonderfully ignorant society and even worse undersociety of dog fighters and irresponsible owners they are now known as vicous killing machines. All pit bull lovers know which is true! See this earlier post about “The Nanny Dog” http://itsthepitsrescue.wordpress.com/2009/08/05/the-pit-bull-nanny-dog-an-endangered-breed/. Thank you again for visiting and loving this misunderstood breed!

Just recently I’ve been looking in search of some bit more knowledge about Eukanuba. Can it be really that the base is comprised of soya? Clearly there’s other things such as meat in it, but that doesn’t to me sound like a healthy start.

Henry-
I’m no expert on dog food. All I know is that the best dog food you can get for middle class income is the Costco Kirkland brand. That is the main food the rescue recommends. My mother was a vet tech for 3 years and she compared numerous foods by ingredients and consulted many vets, once again Kirkland came out on top. If you want to do good research I would suggest comparing ingredients in different foods.
Good luck on your search!

Thank you for your wonderful work in getting the TRUTH out there on our beloved Bully Breeds. I have my first rescue, and she has converted my media-brainwashed Mom (love her, though
) on pit bulls for life. Heck, my parents have two cats, and my Sonni stays with them all when I leave town. Matter of fact, the one cat smacks her in the face all the time and she just sits there and takes it!!!
There’s only one breed of dog for me!

Eric-
I’m so happy you like the blog. Thank you more than words can say for rescuing and loving this breed. Sonni sure sounds like a great catch! My sis wanted nothing to do with my pit Bailey when we got her at 8 weeks old, now 3 yr old Bailey runs around with my 2 year old nephew Gavyn. This blog is all about educating our community and helping people to understand the breed for what they truly are. I feel if people had a little more knowledge about these amazing dogs they wouldn’t be in the horrific situation they are in. If you are on facebook please add me, I would love to keep up with Sonni. My FB is on the blog in the links section.
